Aaron Boone has been manager of the New York Yankees for the last nine seasons. During his tenure, the Yankees haven’t won a World Series. While many Bronx Bombers fans are calling for Boone’s dismissal, the odds of that move seem increasingly doubtful. According to The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty, it’s “unlikely” there will be a change in the dugout before 20027.

“Boone is entering the final year of a two-year contract extension, and considering Cashman voiced support for him Wednesday, it’s unlikely there will be a change before 2027,” wrote Kuty on Friday morning.

Boone is the longest-tenured Yankees manager in franchise history without a World Series victory. For the second straight season, New York has been bounced by a division rival in the AL Division Series (ALDS). Last season, the Toronto Blue Jays won the AL East on their way to dispatching the Bombers in a four-game ALDS win. This October, the Yankees were swept from the playoffs by the Tampa Bay Rays, who also captured the AL East.

If Boone does return to the dugout next spring, then it’s possible his seat will be the hottest it’s ever been. As Kuty mentioned, the veteran manager is entering the final year of his current deal. With a potential lockout looming, switching managers might put the Yankees behind the eight ball, as new managers hired this winter will have less time with their clubs, especially if the lockout costs Major League Baseball regular season games next summer.

In any case, keeping Boone sends a message to Bombers fans. For years, the Yankees have operated under the World Series or bust mantra. Now, it feels as if the franchise is just content with regular season success and postseason berths with Boone at the helm. If that continues, expect New York’s chase for their 28th title to continue indefinitely.
