Karl-Anthony Towns Willing to Take a Discount, But Knicks’ $200M Offer Falls Far Short of His $270M Max

· Yahoo Sports

NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns wants to stay with the New York Knicks, especially after winning the 2026 championship. Towns will enter the 2026-27 season in the third year of his four-year, $224 million contract extension. KAT is eligible to sign a four-year, $276 million contract.

The Knicks want Towns to take a pay cut, similar to what Jalen Brunson did in 2024. Brunson signed a four-year, $156.5 million contract extension, leaving $113 million on the table.

The star big man is open to taking less money in his next deal. However, he hasn’t met eye-to-eye with the Knicks, who want him to take a $76 million discount. The most recent offer was a four-year, $200 million deal, which seems low to Towns.

NBA insider Chris Haynes revealed on NBATV on Thursday that Karl-Anthony Towns remains interested in taking a pay cut.

“Sources have relayed to me that sides still remain far apart on an extension. From what I was told, Karl-Anthony Towns is willing to take less, but they are nowhere close to that,” Haynes said.

“Right now, his max is four years, $270 million, right? And the Knicks, I was told, have offered four years, $200 million. And Karl-Anthony Towns, his representation, they’re not going for that right now.”

Towns sacrificed a lot in the Knicks’ postseason run. In the playoffs, the big man operated like a facilitator in the post. He averaged a playoff-high of 4.9 assists per game. He also averaged 15.9 points and 10.6 rebounds through 19 games.

After the third year of his deal, Towns has a $61 million player option.

Karl-Anthony Towns Feels Disrespected By the Knicks’ Contract Offer

Karl-Anthony Towns does not feel like the Knicks value his contributions to their championship run. When his current contract standoff was brought up, the six-time All-Star expressed his frustration and feels like he deserves to be paid.

“No s Sherlock,” he said. “I just won a championship. You’d think it was pretty easy. Unless you guys [reporters] think I have something else to prove.”

“Simply put: I want to do something to keep the team together and can work with the Knicks and also values me. And none of those things are close to happening.”

Towns and the Knicks have until June to agree to a contract extension. However, the longer the contract situation remains unresolved, the more challenging it is for the organization to keep the star big man.
