‘Dragged out of train’: Pune students detained while on way to Delhi protest against Gyanesh Kumar

On October 8, Shravani Bua, a student leader from Maharashtra, was travelling with 13 other students to Delhi on the Goa Express when the group was intercepted first at Bhusawal station in Jalgaon district.

Bua lives in Kasba Peth, a neighbourhood in Pune and a student at University of Pune. In July, she had taken part in the nationwide youth protests demanding the resignation of the former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

On Thursday, she was on her way to Delhi to join protests called by the Cockroach Janata Party on October 10 to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

“The officials who entered our coach were from the Maharashtra police,” Bua told Scroll. “They asked us to go with them for questioning. When we refused and demanded they show us a legal warrant, they argued with us but eventually left,” she said.

But more obstacles were to come.

When the train reached Itarsi station around 6 pm, a large group of Madhya Pradesh police officials entered the coach and “manhandled, dragged and forced the students out of the train”, Bua alleged.
