No Laughing Matter: Carnell Tate Can’t Let One Mistake Define His Breakout Game
· Yahoo Sports
Rookie wide receiver Carnell Tate undoubtedly had his best game as a pro this past weekend against the Baltimore Ravens. Hauling in 9 of his 12 targets, Tate racked up 145 yards, including a 33-yard reception in the second quarter. That 33-yard catch, however, ended in a costly fumble as safety Kyle Hamilton punched the ball free. The play became an even bigger talking point when CBS cameras later caught Tate laughing on the bench with fellow receiver Calvin Ridley.
It’s obviously not a great look, especially for a rookie top-10 pick, but there’s more to it than what’s on the surface. Despite the fumble and the sideline behavior caught on tape, Tate can’t let one moment define his breakout game, or who he becomes as a player going forward.

No Laughing Matter: Carnell Tate Can’t Let One Mistake Define His Breakout Game
The Good and The Bad
Titans fans have been not so patiently waiting for Tate to bust out with a performance that shows why the team took him fourth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. After not amassing more than 58 yards in any single game in September, Tate took off against the Ravens for 145. It was a season high for him in yards, targets and catches. Finally, one of the Titans’ biggest offensive investments was beginning to look like the player they envisioned when they drafted him fourth overall.
Late in the first half, down 21-7, the Titans were looking to move the ball into position for a score to close the gap. Quarterback Cam Ward connected to Tate on a 33-yard pass that was about to put Tennessee in field goal range. Hamilton would knock the ball out of Tate’s hands for the fumble, which was recovered by safety Malaki Starks. The Ravens would turn that into a field goal to end the half and go up 24-7.
The Ugly
Fumbles happen in the NFL, and this one wasn’t necessarily a gamechanger in that the Titans were already struggling to keep up with the Ravens. But mistakes are mistakes, and this one was highlighted not only because it was possibly a six-point swing. Shortly after the play, footage was shown of Tate smiling and laughing with Ridley.
Immediate reaction online was, of course, very negative from fans. No one likes to see a player on the team they root for appear to be taking a costly mistake lightly. However, head coach Robert Saleh said after the game that Tate was visibly upset when he came to the sideline following the fumble. Tate offered his own explanation, saying he “laughs off bad plays,” just as he did during his time at Ohio State.
Whether fans agree with that approach or not, Tate has acknowledged the mistake and said the right things afterward. Now it’s time to put it behind him and move forward.
The Bigger Picture
The overall result of Sunday’s game for Tate was a net positive. It was the type of performance you want to see from a wide receiver taken in the top 10 of the draft. Tate knows he has mistakes that he needs to clean up. The issue will be if the fumbles continue and turn into a trend.
Tate’s continued development into a top-tier wideout will only help Ward, who continues to face criticism during his second NFL season. The Titans need Ward and Tate to develop together, making games like Sunday’s encouraging even when they aren’t perfect.
The responses to the sideline incident from Saleh and Tate paint it in a much better light than the original viewing. As long as the Titans continue to lose, moments like this will receive more scrutiny. It’s important for Tate to learn from this, both on the field and off.
The Last Word
Tate’s fumble deserves criticism; his 145-yard performance deserves recognition. And the brief footage of him laughing shouldn’t be allowed to become a referendum on his character. Sunday wasn’t a bad game from Tate. It was an encouraging game with one very important lesson attached to it.
As the Titans try to rebuild, Tate will be at the center of what this team becomes over the next few years. How he responds to Sunday’s mistake could be just as important as the impressive plays he made throughout the afternoon.
