GameStop and Third-Party Resellers Raise Used PS5 Pro Price to $1,400 — a $500 Markup on Sony's RRP
· IGN

GameStop and third-party resellers have raised the price of used PS5 Pro consoles to as much as $1,400 — a $500 markup on Sony's suggested retail price.
Last night, rumors began flying around that GameStop would be jacking up the price on pre-owned PS5 Pros to $1,399 for an all-digital PS5 Pro. That was confirmed this morning when the company's website was updated with this price point. Third-party resellers who move products through Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart have also changed their prices to similar amounts. The price hike appears to be a result of the overwhelming demand for Sony's premium console, which had a price increase earlier this year that raised the price from $750 to $900.

Demand is expected to be high for the console due to the release of GTA 6, which will most likely take advantage of the console's extra power. However, Sony is unable to meet that demand due to ongoing component shortages, which have allowed the pre-owned market to ask for more money than they normally would. Prices on used PS5 Pros through third-party resellers have been well over MSRP since new units began selling out earlier this year, so it seems GameStop has decided to capitalize on the opportunity.
Of course, this kind of money could get you pretty close to a nice PC, but the difference for a lot of people who are currently in the market for a new game machine is that a PC won't play GTA 6 in November. As a result, people will be forced to either pay a hefty price for a console or go without.
This is the first console generation where hardware prices have significantly increased instead of dropping, making it harder for new players to hop on board. It also raises questions about the pricing of the next console generation and if they will even be worth it at launch. As for the PS5 Pro specifically, IGN gave the console a 7/10 in 2024 and stated that its launch price tag was already a hard sell.
"The PlayStation 5 Pro is an impressive console with noticeable boosts in performance and graphics for games that take advantage of its powerful hardware," reads an excerpt from our review. "But for $700, you’ll need to think twice about whether or not the upgrade is worth the price tag."
