Environment Canada issued its first yellow frost advisory of the season on Monday for the Toronto area and parts of southwestern Ontario. The advisory was lifted mid-morning Tuesday.

When it issued the alert, the weather agency said it expected temperatures to fall to near or below freezing overnight Monday and into early Tuesday.

Environment Canada advised residents in the affected areas, which included London, Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area, to take preventative measures to protect cold-sensitive plants, trees, and crops by covering them, especially those in areas prone to frost.

Based on data the weather agency collected at Toronto Pearson Airport, the thermometer reached a high of 15 C Monday afternoon. The temperature began its steady descent into the evening, dropping to a low of 5 C at around 5 a.m. Tuesday.

Conditions are favourable for the development of frost when clear skies and light winds coincide with cool temperatures, especially in low-lying areas, according to Environment Canada.

Thanksgiving weekend forecast

For the rest of this week, The Weather Network forecasts a lower risk of frost, with temperatures expected to be below seasonal averages but remain higher overnight.

Torontonians can expect a milder Thanksgiving weekend with mostly sunny skies for most of the weekend. Temperatures are expected to peak at 21 C Sunday, which is 5 degrees above the average high for this time of year in the city.

By Monday, a 30% chance of rain could dampen plans as many prepare to sit down for their turkey dinners, though the forecasted high remains above seasonal, at 20 C.
