The New England Patriots needed much more than a bounce-back performance Sunday. They needed to find out what Drake Maye would do when a game against one of the AFC’s best teams landed squarely on his shoulders. Maye provided a pretty convincing answer.

New England stunned the Buffalo Bills 29-26 at the new Highmark Stadium, becoming the first visiting team to win in Buffalo’s new home. The result moved the Patriots to 2-2, but the larger development may have been how Maye responded after New England’s ugly Week 3 loss to Jacksonville.

Maye Answered New England’s Biggest Question

Maye threw three touchdown passes against Buffalo, including the decisive 23-yard strike to Efton Chism III late in the fourth quarter. The spectacular one-handed catch will receive plenty of attention, and deservedly so. But the sequence leading to it may have been even more important for New England.

Maye had to match Josh Allen in a hostile environment with the game slipping into shootout territory. He kept attacking. Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel praised his quarterback afterward, noting Maye had gone “toe-to-toe” with Allen.

That is significant because New England isn’t simply trying to determine whether Maye can become a productive NFL starter anymore. The Patriots need to know whether he can eventually become the type of quarterback capable of winning January games against players like Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

Sunday offered another piece of evidence.

Patriots Finally Have A Signature Win

New England’s 2-2 record hardly makes it an AFC powerhouse.

But the Patriots now own something they didn’t have before Sunday: a result capable of changing how opponents view them. Buffalo entered the game unbeaten. New England was coming off a 35-6 loss to Jacksonville.

Instead of allowing one bad performance to become two, Maye and the Patriots walked into Buffalo and won. Craig Woodson sealed the victory by intercepting Allen after Chism’s touchdown.

There will be plenty to clean up before New England hosts Las Vegas next Sunday. But for one afternoon, the Patriots looked like a team capable of beating an AFC heavyweight.

Even more importantly, their quarterback looked comfortable being the reason why.
