Entering Year 13, this is the first time in several seasons that Antetokounmpo is on a team that can be considered a contender for the NBA championship. Alongside the Greek Freak, the Heat also have Bam Adebayo, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins, all of whom are capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.
His time in Milwaukee saw him win every accolade, but in the last few seasons, the front office failed to put good players around him. Determined that he wanted to compete for another championship, Antetokounmpo was finally traded on June 22.
While he has his eyes set on the prize this season, he has also revealed his plans for his future.
Antetokounmpo says he has 5 or 6 good years
Aged 31, Antetokounmpo is still one of the best players in the NBA. From scoring to defending at an elite level, there are not many players in the league who are better at playing on both ends than the Greek Freak.
However, as he enters Year 13, questions of how many more years he could sustain this dominance have started to be raised.
“I know I have so much more in my tank. I know I’m 31, but I’m not 35 or 36 and thinking like, “Oh, I gotta start slowing down.” You see (Kevin Durant), like, KD just turned 38. I’m 31. I know I got five, six good years. We’ll see,” said Antetokounmpo in his interview with The Athletic.
Last season, Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points and 9.8 rebounds playing for the Bucks. It was the first time in three seasons that he had failed to average 30 and 11, but considering he suffered injuries and was placed under a minute restriction towards the second half of the season, Antetokounmpo was brilliant.
As far as his timeline is concerned, Antetokounmpo’s game revolves around his dominance and athleticism. Naturally, with time, his elite rim-running ability will take a dip, but with the work that he puts in, the Greek superstar can definitely extend his career by adding skills to his repertoire.
In his first preseason game with the Heat, he reminded the world of how dominant he is on the basketball court. Going into the season with the likes of Wiggins, Thompson, and Tim Hardaway Jr., his passing game is also set to be unlocked.
