“She’s Out of That Place,” “Needs to Go to Golden State”: Fans Erupt as Kelsey Mitchell Sparks ‘Selfish’ Fever Exit Talk Amid Free Agency Decision

The Indiana Fever playoff run ended with a 94-83 loss to the Las Vegas Aces in Game 3. Now, the Fever have big questions heading into the summer. The Fever have several pending unrestricted free agents, and their longest-tenured guard, Kelsey Mitchell, is the most notable.

With the Fever focused on getting younger, questions about the 30-year-old’s future in Indiana have come up. She recently added more fuel to the fire. During her season-ending press conference on Saturday, Mitchell updated fans on where her mind is on the matter and her status going forward.
“I think I have to be selfish,” Mitchell said. “I think that’s where I am in my career, about what I probably need and what’s probably best for me. But I think being on the Fever and being a part of the organization does come with a lot of ups and downs. What factors in as what’s important for me is having good chemistry on and off the floor. And I’ve only been with one team my entire career, so figuring this out is hard.”
“I’ve got to be selfish where my career is going, in terms of what’s important to me. Whether it be winning, whether it be my own individual success. I worked my tail off to be here, so whatever I do, it’s gonna come from a selfish standpoint. I’ll be honest about that.”
Mitchell’s comments have sparked chatter about her future, with many wondering if her time in Indiana may be coming to a close. Some have floated a few teams as potential fits. Here’s a look at some of the reactions.
“She’s out of that place lol, don’t blame her,” a fan said.
“Kelsey needs to go to Golden State. They need consistent scoring. They already have the defense,” another fan said.
The nine-year WNBA veteran, who has spent every season with the Fever, is an unrestricted free agent and could hit the open market if the team can’t agree to an extension.
She has raised her stock immensely this season, being in the MVP conversation and second in the league in scoring (24.7 PPG). She might look for a more defined role with another team. That said, a return to Indiana is still possible.
Fever Will Have Trouble Attracting Players If Kelsey Mitchell Leaves, Claims Veteran Commentator
The Indiana Fever have become a solid playoff team over the past two years, but losing Kelsey Mitchell could make it very difficult to attract needle-moving talent, per commentator Jason Whitlock.
Reacting to Mitchell’s situation, Whitlock said:
“Kelsey Mitchell just had the most efficient scoring season we’ve ever had in women’s basketball,” he wrote on X. “If she leaves, don’t be surprised if the Fever have trouble attracting players willing to play alongside the Caitlin Clark Content Cult. NOT CC. The Cult is the problem.”
Indiana has made the playoffs for the third straight year, and much of the credit goes to Clark, as her arrival changed the team’s outlook. As for Mitchell, this was also her second time competing in the playoffs alongside Clark. This season, in particular, showed how dangerous the duo can be.
Despite how good Clark has been and her high ceiling, Whitlock believes the Fever may not look like an attractive destination if Mitchell leaves, especially because of the attention that comes with Clark’s fanbase.
The Fever do have some star-caliber core players and young players with that potential, even if they haven’t completed their core yet. But Mitchell still fits within the age group of Indiana’s core.
If she decides to continue her career in Indiana, the Fever would be willing to offer her another short deal. Her immense experience, leadership, and connection with Clark would be vital to a team looking for another deep playoff run.
