While the Dallas Cowboys made a big trade for Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. this week, it is not a guarantee that they will sign him to the long-term extension he wants.

The Cowboys have been linked to trade rumors for the last couple of weeks because owner and general manager Jerry Jones has suggested a deal was on the horizon. Well, that move came on Wednesday when they sent a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to the Steelers for the talented CB.

Once he returns to the field from his “back issues,” he will immediately improve a defense that’s struggled since last season. Yet, while the Cowboys are happy to have the 27-year-old in the fold, according to The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones, “many around the league believed Dallas overpaid, based largely on the belief that teams don’t view Porter as a top-tier corner.”

Dallas Cowboys could have trouble signing Joey Porter Jr. to new long-term deal

It is debatable whether the trade was an overpay or not. However, if Porter Jr. continues to develop and becomes a Pro Bowler more than once over the next few seasons, then it will dispel any talk of Dallas giving up too much for the cornerback. But the Cowboys must lock him into a new long-term deal to make it all worth it, and it seems that is not guaranteed.

In his report, Jones notes that Porter Jr. is represented by Athletes First. The same talent agency the Cowboys could not find common ground with on a new contract for Micah Parsons. Furthermore, Athletes First also reps several other Dallas players set to be free agents after the season, including George Pickens, DeMarvion Overshown, and Malik Hooker.

Outside of agreeing to a pair of deals with the agency for Dak Prescott, the Cowboys and Athletes First have struggled to get on the same page when it comes to big contracts for star players. They couldn’t agree on terms for Parsons, so he was traded to the Green Bay Packers last year. They couldn’t see eye-to-eye on a deal for George Pickens, so they ended talks in the spring and slapped a franchise tag on him.

Dallas Cowboys could use the franchise tag on Joey Porter Jr. next year

The NFL insider suggests the Cowboys know they could end up having the same trouble agreeing to a deal for Porter Jr. since he wants to be paid like an elite CB despite never being a Pro Bowler. So there are a couple of directions they could go if more contract drama emerges after the season.

“The Cowboys could use the franchise or transition tag on Porter in March if they so wish,” Jones wrote. “If Porter signs elsewhere, the Cowboys would be eligible for a compensatory draft pick in 2028. One AFC executive says that could be construed as, effectively, a pick swap to get 14 games of play from Porter.”
