Cowboys’ Jerry Jones Makes Trade Plans Clear After Landing Joey Porter Jr.

· Yahoo Sports

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made a major move by trading for Pittsburgh cornerback Joey Porter Jr. But he said the team may not be finished. During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones gave a direct three-word response that left the door open for more trades.

The deal helps Dallas replace depth lost to injuries in the secondary. Jones’ remarks signaled a win-now approach as Dallas continues to evaluate market options for defensive help.

Jerry Jones leaves door open for future moves after Joey Porter Jr. trade

Dallas enters Week 4 at 1-2, and injuries to cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. have thinned a secondary already ranked 30th in total defense under first-year coordinator Christian Parker. Porter started 41 of 47 games for Pittsburgh across three seasons, recording 165 tackles, 31 pass breakups, and three interceptions.

Jones addressed the trade and what comes next during a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan. “Everything is fluid,” Jones said. “It’s a belief in where we are, what we can do right now,” Jones added.

Porter sought a $30 million contract extension from Pittsburgh, but the Steelers would not negotiate during the season.

Porter could make his Cowboys debut in three days against the Houston Texans, giving Dallas an immediate test of its newest addition.

Porter, 26, is the son of former Steelers Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter and was a 2023 second-round pick out of Penn State. Dallas sent Pittsburgh a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round pick to complete the deal, marking the third trade between the two franchises since May 2025, following earlier deals for George Pickens and Broderick Jones.

Dallas Cowboys prioritize immediate success to fix secondary depth issues

The secondary’s health issues left Dallas without reliable depth behind DaRon Bland, raising the stakes on every roster decision. The Cowboys have not recorded an interception through three games this season.

Dallas surrendered meaningful draft capital to acquire Porter, who is seeking a long-term contract extension. Jones previewed that kind of move three weeks earlier. “That does show that we have really viable, serious room financially to make a trade if we wanted to right now,” Jones said.

The Cowboys’ own mailbag described the deal as an all-in move, and analyst Colin Cowherd called it a sign that Dallas is now playing under win-or-bust expectations. Jones secured immediate help for the defensive backfield without sacrificing the franchise’s long-term roster flexibility.
