During his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan (KRLD-FM), the Cowboys owner/general manager opened up on Dallas' trade for cornerback Joey Porter Jr. Jones said he has high expectations for Porter, pointing out that he hopes the move would have a George Pickens-like effect on Dallas' defense. For those in need of a refresher, Pickens made a big impact on Dallas' defense after he was traded from Pittsburgh.

In recent months, Jones has spoken about his willingness to make a big move to improve Dallas' roster. The Porter trade fits the definition of a "splashy trade." Does that mean the Cowboys are done making big moves?

"Since being involved with the Cowboys, it's always fluid the next day and you can't sit still," Jones said. "There's always, just the very nature of the game. Just look at it from a player's standpoint. That's always an evolving process, maturation in their careers. Going from a rookie and that skill level to a veteran and then potentially, dare I say it, diminished skills as is sure to happen as time goes along. All of that keeps you on your feet every day."

According to Jones, the motivation to improve the roster isn't a newfound factor for the Cowboys. Jones said he decided a couple of years ago that he wanted to rework how Dallas looked defensively.

The Cowboys are looking for Porter to have an immediate impact on a defense that has struggled early in the 2026 season. His playing status for Sunday against the Houston Texans is still unknown, but the cornerback practiced with the Cowboys on Thursday and Friday.

Jones also looked ahead to the long-term future with Porter.

"Yes, the answer is yes. And I really don't need to embellish that," Jones replied when asked if the Cowboys would consider signing Porter to a long-term extension after the 2026 campaign ends. "On the other hand, by the very nature of the trade, we're working under an existing contract with an extended contract."

The Cowboys owner also compared Porter's contract situation with that of Pickens. Pickens is currently playing under the franchise tag after a productive 2025 outing.

"In these guys' case, it's a monster amount in their lives of a contract at this level. By the same token, there's two to tango here. There's the team and I being comfortable with making that kind of commitment," Jones said. "What you're seeing in both those cases is working through a reasonable way to advance the ball. Advance the ball being [to] get up, be an outstanding player as well as having an outstanding contract."
