Stephanie White wanted a review of a foul call. Instead, the Indiana Fever coach ended up with a technical foul and another source of frustration during her team’s final game.
The incident occurred early in the second quarter of Thursday’s 94-83 playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces. Lexie Hull and Brianna Turner became tangled while battling for position, and Hull was called for a foul. White tried to get a timeout so Indiana could challenge the decision. The request was not recognized before play resumed, and her subsequent attempt to get the officials’ attention resulted in a technical.
Afterward, White criticized both the communication and the officiating.
“They weren’t talking to us,” White said, according to the Indianapolis Star. “The officiating was terrible.”
A challenge attempt turns into another penalty
White’s explanation centered on the process. She said she went onto the court trying to call a timeout and initiate a challenge, only to receive a technical foul.

For a coach, that creates two separate frustrations. The original call remains in place, and the attempt to have it reviewed produces another penalty. A replay can fuel debate about which player initiated contact. White’s complaint, however, also raises the question of whether Indiana had a fair opportunity to request the review available to it.
Her technical remained part of the game’s record. Any financial consequence should be distinguished from a separate league announcement of additional discipline; a technical foul does not by itself establish that the WNBA has issued a new punishment for postgame comments.

Indiana’s season ends with several frustrations
The disputed sequence happened well before the final minutes, leaving the Fever time to respond on the court.
Las Vegas ultimately advanced behind 36 points and 10 rebounds from A’ja Wilson, with Chelsea Gray adding 23 points. Their production helped the Aces win the deciding game and close the first-round series. White’s criticism should be understood alongside that basketball result. Indiana had an officiating grievance, but it also faced a championship-caliber opponent that delivered in an elimination game.
For the Fever coach, the season’s ending left plenty to review. The Hull call added a particularly frustrating sequence: an attempt to challenge, a missed opportunity to obtain that review and a technical foul while trying to be heard.
