After a stint as the Knicks’ President of Basketball Operations between 2003 and 2006, Thomas was handed a different role with the team.
Thomas was the head coach of the Knicks between 2006 and 2008. It’s safe to say that his tenure with the team did not pan out the way that either side would have hoped.
New York Knicks fans don’t want to see Isiah Thomas return
With Madison Square Garden Sports’ decision to turn the New York Knicks into a standalone public company, Isiah Thomas will return to the franchise to be a part of their board of directors.
Thomas, who has stayed close friends with Knicks owner James Dolan, has been in business with MSG Sports for a few years now.
However, news of the Hall of Famer’s return to the Knicks has not gone down well with the team, as fans are worried this could be a case of history repeating itself.
One fan wrote, “Dolan relapsing on all of his bad habits now that he thinks he has lifetime immunity from Knicks fan hatred after the championship.”
Another fan added, “Just keep him away from the team and any real decision-making.”
A third fan suggested that Thomas should join a team he has a better history with, noting, “This makes no sense to me. Zeke should join the Pistons board. He succeeded there.”
“One thing Isiah always did unwaveringly was be a loyal vote for Dolan. No surprises there. Just keep him away from Leon, Coach Brown and the boys,” wrote a fourth fan concerned about the optics of Zeke’s return.
A fifth fan went as far as to compare this to another controversial Knicks decision, noting, “Remember when Dolan invited Trump to Game 2, and Knicks lost? This is much worse.”
And lastly, one final fan labelled James Dolan “the worst owner in sports. He has done everything in his power to sabotage a repeat.”
Thomas’ tenure with the Knicks across his two roles was clearly unpopular, and fans are still resentful about his time in New York. In this case, time has not healed old wounds.
