Urban Meyer names Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith his Heisman frontrunner

Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says Jeremiah Smith should win the Heisman Trophy.

"Right now, if they're handing out the hardware, you're out of your mind if you don't hand that to Jeremiah Smith," Meyer said on "The Triple Option" show Sept. 30. "He's the Heisman winner unless someone takes it, in my opinion."

Smith is coming off a signature performance in a 42-19 win against Illinois with career bests in receptions (12), receiving yards (217) and touchdowns (four).

Through four weeks, Smith leads the FBS with 617 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns.

Smith is also two touchdowns and 10 receptions away from breaking those Ohio State records. He broke the school's record for receiving yards against Kent State Sept. 19.

Smith has the best odds of any player to win the Heisman Trophy at +275, according to BetMGM's odds Sept. 30. He leads Miami quarterback Darian Mensah (+400) and Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor (+700).
