Roman Anthony removed from Red Sox’ AL Wild Card Game 1 vs. Yankees

NEW YORK — Red Sox leadoff hitter Roman Anthony was removed during the sixth inning in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card Series against the Yankees on Tuesday.

Andruw Monasterio pinch hit for Anthony with one out in the inning against Yankees starter Cam Schlittler.
The 22-year-old missed 101 games from May 5 through Aug. 29 due to a torn ligament under his right ring finger.
He experienced discomfort in the same hand on Tuesday, prompting the Red Sox to remove him.
“He took a check swing and then another swing and his hand flared on him,” manager Chad Tracy said after Boston’s 9-0 loss. “And it got uncomfortable, so we had to make a move there.”
When reporters requested Anthony postgame, Red Sox media relations officials said the DH had already left Yankee Stadium.
Tracy said Anthony has felt “a zinger” in the hand “every once in a while” since returning.
“Today some stuff happened that was more serious and was uncomfortable,” Tracy said.
Tracy said it’s unclear whether Anthony will play in Game 2 on Wednesday.
“He obviously was in a lot of discomfort. So we had to remove him. We’ll have to see what tomorrow brings,” Tracy said.
Anthony went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts in two at-bats against Schlittler before exiting.
Boston activated him from the injured list Aug. 30. In 25 games to close out the regular season, he batted .262 with a .321 on-base percentage, .476 slugging percentage and .797 OPS. He had four home runs, six doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs, 12 runs, nine walks and 33 strikeouts over 112 plate appearances. He posted a 29.5% strikeout percentage during the stretch.
Overall this season, he batted .245 with a .339 on-base percentage, .396 slugging percentage and .735 OPS in 55 games (242 plate appearances).
Anthony struck out swinging on a curveball to begin the game. He struck out to end the third inning on a 99 mph four-seam fastball.
Boston was trailing 2-0 when Anthony came out of the game. Monasterio struck out in his sixth-inning pinch-hit at-bat.
