3 key players on Vikings' first injury report for Dolphins game

· Yahoo Sports

The Minnesota Vikings have a chance to stay undefeated when they host the winless Miami Dolphins on Sunday, but they might have to do it without some of their top players.

Minnesota’s first injury report of the week includes wide receiver Justin Jefferson (ankle), running back Aaron Jones (rest), and linebacker Blake Cashman (elbow).

Jefferson did not practice on Thursday, and head coach Kevin O’Connell signaled that Jefferson isn’t a sure thing to play after leaving the Vikings’ win over Tampa Bay in Week 3 with a sprained ankle.

“We’ll be prepared this weekend for whatever takes place with Justin,” O’Connell said. “If we have him. If we don’t, it was a good learning lesson for everybody involved, including the guys that we have a lot of confidence in to step in there and make some plays.”

Jones, who has carried the load at running back since Jordan Mason went on short-term injured reserve with a fractured thumb, didn’t practice either. However, he was held out for rest, not an injury. That’s good news after he was banged up against the Bears in Week 2 and appeared to get dinged up against the Buccaneers, too.

It’s unclear when Cashman sustained an elbow injury, but it made him a limited participant on Wednesday. That’s a pretty good sign that he’ll ramp up his efforts as the week progresses and be ready to play when the Vikings and Dolphins kick off at 3:05 p.m. on Sunday.

Punter Brett Thorson (hamstring) didn’t practice. He missed the Bucs game, and it could be a second straight start for Johnny Hekker, who averaged 46.5 yards on eight punts against Tampa Bay. Hekker dropped two of his eight punts inside the 20-yard line.

Rookie cornerback Charles Demmings is also expected to miss some time after sustaining a hamstring injury against the Bucs. He’s primarily played on special teams.
