When is a sellout not a sellout?
As an NCAA member, Florida State tracks tickets sold for business metrics, revenue planning and record-keeping. The Seminoles' home game against Central Arkansas on Saturday was officially announced as a sellout, with 67,277 tickets sold.

Yet anyone inside Doak Campbell Stadium on Parents Weekend could see it was far from a packed house.
The announced crowd for FSU's 34-7 victory over Central Arkansas reflected tickets sold or distributed, not the number of fans who actually attended.
While FSU sold all sellable seats and students claimed nearly all of their allotted tickets (16,000), empty seats were visible throughout the stadium and many spectators headed for the exits by halftime with the Seminoles leading 24-7.
As embattled FSU coach Mike Norvell usually does after home games, he mentioned his appreciation for the fans in attendance.
Comfortable lead, hot temperatures contribute to early exits
The combination of a comfortable lead and temperatures in the upper 80s under cloudless, sunny skies likely contributed to the early departures in a game broadcast on the ACC Network.
But the optics probably didn't look that great to those who tuned in.
Announced attendance and actual attendance are often two very different figures.
Announced attendance represents tickets sold or distributed, while actual attendance measures the number of fans who pass through the gates. FSU, like many major college programs, does not release actual attendance figures.
FSU fan interest remains strong enough to buy tickets, but keeping them engaged for four quarters is another challenge.
Against Central Arkansas, the Seminoles (2-2) were balanced on offense, scoring on six of their first seven drives and averaging 8.7 yards per play. The Bears controlled time of possession (39:12) but were not able to generate much offense. Norvell's alma mater had just 248 offensive yards, averaging 3.6 yards per play.
FSU quarterback Ashton Daniels completed 12 of 18 passes for 224 yards, while running back Ousmane Kromah had 86 yards, including touchdowns of 6-yards and 1-yard.
FSU fan support will be critical as Seminoles enter important stretch
As FSU enters a pivotal stretch of the season, beginning with Virginia's visit to Doak Campbell Stadium on Oct. 3, maintaining fan support may prove just as important to Norvell's future as any result on the field.
The Seminoles do not have to be perfect, but they must look organized, competitive and capable of beating quality ACC opponents. October will provide plenty of opportunities to make that case, with road trips to Louisville and Miami and a Halloween-week showdown against Clemson in Tallahassee.
In a perfect world, FSU's administration would prefer to avoid making a coaching change during the season, especially while conducting a search for a new athletic director. But patience is not unlimited, and the pressure on Norvell will continue to mount if the Seminoles fail to put together complete performances against stronger competition.
The challenge becomes even greater as fans watch rival programs gain momentum.
Florida, under first-year coach Jon Sumrall, improved to 4-0 with a stunning 52-18 victory over fourth-ranked Ole Miss, marking the Gators' best start since 2019 and snapping a 12-game losing streak against top-five opponents. Miami, meanwhile, was expected to remain unbeaten Saturday and continue its climb in the national rankings.
That reality only heightens the scrutiny surrounding FSU.
Brand strength and fan support remain the program's greatest assets, as evidenced by another announced sellout at Doak Campbell Stadium. But to keep fans engaged and invested, Norvell's Seminoles must show meaningful progress over the next month.
Otherwise, the empty seats that dotted Doak Campbell Stadium against Central Arkansas may become more than a one-game snapshot and could ultimately be the biggest sign that the Seminoles Nation has reached its limit.
