It caps off a brutal year for Los Angeles, finishing with a grim 16-28 record and missing out on the playoffs once again. Between injuries and a total lack of consistency on the court, the Sparks just couldn’t get anything going, leaving the front office with no real choice but to start fresh.
Sparks legend Nneka Ogwumike also officially called time on her stellar WNBA career, wrapping up a Hall of Fame legacy that leaves big shoes to fill.
Jemele Hill wants Teresa Weatherspoon as new Sparks head coach
Jemele Hill isn’t holding back on who should take over the LA Sparks. Taking to social media, she urged the front office to hire Teresa Weatherspoon, calling her a “strong coach” and “incredible leader” who can instantly earn player trust and build the winning culture Los Angeles desperately needs.
She said: ‘The Sparks need to hire Teresa Weatherspoon. Great player. Strong coach. Incredible leader. They need someone who players will trust and respect and will build a winning culture.’
Weatherspoon is as familiar a face as you’ll find in basketball. A Naismith Hall of Famer, she starred for the New York Liberty before finishing her WNBA playing career with the Sparks in 2004.
On the sidelines, she’s built a serious coaching resume, spending four years as an NBA assistant with the New Orleans Pelicans before taking the reins of the Chicago Sky.
She’s currently head coach of Vinyl BC in the Unrivaled league, bringing the kind of high-energy, player-first leadership the Sparks desperately need right now.
