Teacher, 10-year-old student die during school field trip in Iowa

A 24-year-old elementary school teacher and a 10-year-old student died after a water emergency during a field trip in Iowa earlier this week.
The incident happened at Lake Macbride State Park near Coralville Reservoir on Tuesday afternoon. Police responded to the scene at approximately 1:10 p.m. ET.
“At (1:43 p.m.), responders recovered one adult victim in the Coralville Reservoir, who was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, the teacher was identified as Hannah Jorgensen, who taught at Norman Borlaug Elementary School in Coralville, Iowa.
The search for the boy was suspended due to darkness.
The next day
The following day, the sheriff’s office assisted first responders in the recovery of the boy from the reservoir. He was identified as Ahmed Osman, a Grade 5 student at Norman Borlaug Elementary School.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,” the Iowa City Community School District board said in a statement to PEOPLE on Wednesday. “Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.”
The school also issued an online statement.
“Our building is hurting right now, and so are our hearts,” the statement said. “But knowing that you are all here for us, standing beside us, checking in, and, lifting us up. It means more than we can put into words. We are so grateful for our community and for each and every one of you.”
Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds also offered condolences and support to the school community as the investigation into the incident continues.
“This unimaginable loss touches the entire Borlaug Elementary community and Iowa City School District,” Reynolds said on social media. “Please know that Iowans across our state are standing with you in the difficult days ahead.”
Coralville is approximately 173 kilometres east of Des Moines, the state’s most populous city.
