‘Shaque’ review: There’s a suspicion of a smart thriller here

Every murder mystery does not have to be watertight or fool-proof. Some mysteries have holes that you can drive through, but at least they grab your attention in a car-wreck kind of way. That series has landed on Netflix. It is called Shaque: Trust No One (previously titled Talaash: A Mother’s Search).

Created by Rensil D’Silva and Siddharth P Malhotra and directed by D’Silva, the Hindi show revolves around a Shimla resident whose infant is snatched away from her hours after birth. Anvita (Parineeti Chopra) never stops believing that her daughter is somewhere out there, waiting to be returned to her.
Every year since the kidnapping, somebody has been sending Anvita and her husband Alok (Tahir Raj Bhasin) photos that vaguely indicate their daughter’s progress. This is proof that the baby will be back, says Khurana, the police officer in charge of the case.
Khurana (Anup Soni) should have been following other leads right after the kidnapping, such as the disappearance of CCTV footage from the hospital and characters in Anvita’s circle who would have revealed their deceptions under the slightest pressure. Khurana will be given the opportunity to redeem himself.
