‘Maybe punting on this one…’ – ESPN’s Monica McNutt refuses to give Fever credit for win over Lynx

ESPN’s Monica McNutt has created a stir among fans by blaming the Minnesota Lynx for an uncharacteristically bad performance instead of giving the Indiana Fever the credit.

The Fever picked up a much-needed 96-77 win over the league-leading Lynx to ensure they stay away from the bottom half of the 2026 WNBA Playoffs bracket.
However, the Fever’s execution in this win was ignored on ESPN, as analyst Monica McNutt squarely blamed the Lynx for a lack of effort.
Monica McNutt thinks the Lynx ‘punted’ game against the Fever
With the Lynx falling to a 23-point halftime deficit and subbing out four starters for the rest of the game, McNutt slammed the franchise for punting instead of giving the Fever credit for forcing the situation.
“The Lynx have not helped themselves at all, just flinging the basketball all over the place. This is a team not accustomed to turnovers, but they have 10 in the first half… I am with you. Whether it’s disoriented or an organisation focusing on the bigger picture of the playoffs, maybe punting on this one? This looks like a mess.”
While the original post has clearly biased language to misrepresent McNutt’s words as ‘throwing the game,’ she did openly blame the Lynx for this loss instead of crediting an incredible Fever performance.
Caitlin Clark led the Fever with 27 points, seven rebounds, and nine assists, while co-star Kelsey Mitchell contributed an important 20 points.
Fans aren’t happy with Monica McNutt not crediting the Fever
With the Fever clearly outplaying the Lynx in the first half, as McNutt’s comments came during the halftime show, fans weren’t happy with how she discredited the Fever and Caitlin Clark.

“Monica McNutt is right. The WNBA and Minnesota Lynx took a dump on everybody tonight. Embarrassing,” said Jason Whitlock, one of the only people to support McNutt’s comments.
“Monica McNutt is such a hater,” were the thoughts of a fan.
“They are throwing the game. The Lynx starters were benched after the second half,” said another fan.
“Monica McNutt needs to be fired. She is constantly being unprofessional, never giving the Fever credit, hating on Caitlin Clark,” said one very angry fan.
Her comments came before the Lynx benched their starters because the lead was too big.
The Lynx and Fever face each other in their final regular-season clash as well on September 25, a game the Lynx need to win to ensure they have the No. 1 seed.
They had no intention of punting this result, and the Fever earned this win through a hot start in a pivotal clash.
