Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichenpushed back Wednesday against the idea that wide receiver Alec Pierce returned too quickly from his heel injury after a setback landed him on injured reserve.
Pierce aggravated his surgically repaired left heel during Indianapolis’ 33-30 overtime loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night. IndyStar’s Joel A. Erickson reported Wednesday that the Colts will place Pierce on injured reserve.
Steichen maintained that Indianapolis followed the proper process before clearing Pierce to return.

“We never would have put him on the field if we didn’t feel good about it and he didn’t feel good about it.”
Steichen added that Pierce reached all of the necessary landmarks and benchmarks during his recovery and received clearance from the Colts’ doctors and trainers before playing.
Pierce will attempt to rehab the injury rather than undergo another procedure, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. His placement on injured reserve will now force Indianapolis to move forward without one of its top offensive weapons for at least the immediate future.
The Colts signed Pierce to a four-year, $114 million extension during the offseason following a breakout 2025 campaign. The 26-year-old recorded 1,003 receiving yards and six touchdowns across 15 games while averaging 21.3 yards per reception.
Indianapolis has already added help at wide receiver. ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported Wednesday that newly signed Darius Slayton will practice with the Colts immediately, and Steichen has not ruled out Slayton playing Sunday.
The Colts will attempt to overcome Pierce’s absence while searching for their first win of the season.
Indianapolis (0-2) hosts the Houston Texans (0-2) in Week 3 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.
