Theo Swafford picks UT, but will Class of 2028's top baseball recruit make it to Austin?

After a busy week of recruiting, the Texas baseball program began its weekend on a high note.

On Friday, infielder Theo Swafford announced that he had committed to the Texas baseball program. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound Swafford, who played for Sierra Canyon High in California, is rated by Perfect Game as the top recruit in the Class of 2028.

Swafford's commitment comes during the same week that Texas added pitchers Chase Cotton, Tommy Driver and Parker Klug to its 2028 recruiting class. Those are UT's first four commits for that cycle.

The big question, though, is if Swafford actually makes it to campus for the 2029 baseball season. Over the past 20 years, all of Perfect Game's No. 1 prospects became first-round picks who signed professional contracts. Swafford is UT's highest rated commit since Scott Kazmir was the No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2002 (Kazmir signed with the New York Mets after being taken with the 2002 MLB Draft's 15th pick).

However, there may be some hope for the Longhorns. MLB owners have floated a proposal for draft restrictions as part of the league's next collective bargaining agreement.
