The Chicago Bears had arguably the most impressive performance out of all NFL teams in Week 1. They dropped 59 points against a supposedly good Carolina Panthers defense, showing off the limitless scoring potential this team has under Ben Johnson. Caleb Williams played perhaps the best game of his career, an encouraging sign heading into what should be a pivotal third season in the league.
Now, though, the Bears will face a perennial thorn on their side in Week 2. The Minnesota Vikings are always a tough matchup for Chicago, especially with Brian Flores’ hyper-aggressive defensive schemes. Williams is relishing the opportunity to get into what Ben Johnson calls a “mental war” with Flores, per Carmen Vitali on X.
Johnson is extremely familiar with Flores’ disguise-heavy schemes. Before becoming the Bears’ head coach last year, Johnson frequently faced Flores’ ferocious defense as the offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Johnson’s Lions were able to consistently score against Flores’ Vikings, averaging 30.3 points against Minnesota in four games from 2023 to 2024.

In Chicago, Flores has seen more success against Johnson. The Bears scored 24 and 19 points in the two games they played against Minnesota last season. Williams was pretty effective in those two games, posting 403 passing yards, one passing touchdown, no interceptions, 84 rushing yards, and one rushing touchdown. The only knock on Williams’ performance was his completion rate, completing a measly 55.6% of his pass attempts.
Against the Panthers in Week 1, Williams was extremely productive. He completed 21 of his 29 pass attempts for 269 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The Bears quarterback also added 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Williams accounted for nearly half of Chicago’s scores against Carolina. It will be interesting to see how Williams, Johnson, and the Chicago offense handles Flores’ defense after being good, but not great last season against themm.
