Angel Reese went to Berlin in search of her first senior international championship. She returned as the “Gold Angel.”

USA Basketball introduced the nickname after sharing a video of Reese lying on the court and moving her arms and legs through the gold confetti that had fallen during Team USA’s championship celebration.
“Snow Angel? Nah, Gold Angel,” USA Basketball wrote.
The moment captured Reese’s personality and the significance of the accomplishment. The Atlanta Dream forward had represented the United States at the youth level, but the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup gave her an opportunity to win with the senior national team. Team USA defeated France 97-79 in the championship game after trailing by as many as 14 points.
Angel Reese maximized her limited World Cup role
Reese played only nine minutes in the final, finishing with three points, three rebounds, one steal and one block. Her tournament impact was much larger than one box score.

Reese averaged 7.2 points, five rebounds and 1.2 steals while playing 15 minutes per game. She supplied Team USA with rebounding, defensive activity and physicality off the bench. Her willingness to sprint the floor and create second-chance opportunities gave the Americans a different dimension.
The performance led to several nicknames throughout the World Cup.
FIBA called Reese the “Queen of the Boards” after her work against China and later referred to her as “Berlin Barbie.” USA Basketball’s “Gold Angel” may be the most fitting because it connects directly to the championship she helped secure. Reese did not win the tournament’s Best Defensive Player award, but her contributions remained important as the United States completed an undefeated run.

Reese now turns her attention back to Atlanta
There will be little time for Reese to admire the medal. The Dream entered the break at 26-14 and in fourth place, holding a tiebreaker over the Indiana Fever. Atlanta has four games remaining and is attempting to secure home-court advantage for at least the opening round.
The franchise has suffered three consecutive first-round playoff exits. Reese was acquired to help change that history, and her rebounding could become even more valuable when postseason games slow down. Winning on the international stage gave Reese another important experience early in her career. She accepted a reserve role, adjusted to unfamiliar lineups and found ways to influence games without receiving a high volume of touches.
Now the “Gold Angel” will attempt to bring some of that championship energy back to Atlanta.
