Rodri may have arrived at Barcelona as one of football’s most decorated midfielders, but his immense experience has not been enough to earn him a place among the club’s five captains for the 2026/27 season.
A recent report from The Athletic has shed light on the decision, which could initially appear surprising given Rodri’s age, status and leadership credentials.
Barcelona players have selected Raphinha and Pedri as their first and second captains, respectively.
Furthermore, Eric Garcia, Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal complete the leadership group after being chosen in a vote within the dressing room.
That means Yamal, at just 19, has been handed a formal leadership role ahead of Rodri, the midfielder who captained the teenager during Spain’s World Cup-winning journey.
Barcelona’s captaincy is about more than experience
The decision is less about Rodri’s credentials than it is about how Barcelona traditionally select their captains.
The club has used a player vote to determine the captaincy hierarchy since Pep Guardiola’s spell as manager.

The role carries responsibilities beyond wearing an armband, with captains expected to represent teammates, communicate on their behalf and embody Barcelona publicly.
Crucially, seniority plays a major part in the vote, although that refers primarily to a player’s time at the club rather than simply age or footballing experience.
That helps explain Yamal’s inclusion, as the teenager has already spent three seasons within Barcelona’s first-team environment and has established himself as a central figure in the group.
Rodri, by contrast, has only been at the club for a matter of weeks.

Yamal may still be 19, but he has grown into Barcelona’s first team alongside many of the players who voted for the leadership group.
Rodri brings a very different resume. He is 30, has captained Spain and has already reached the highest levels of the game, including leading his country to its latest World Cup triumph.
Yet those achievements do not automatically translate into Barcelona captaincy.

At Barça, the armband is closely tied to relationships and history within the dressing room, where Rodri simply has not had enough time to establish that connection.
Rodri does not need the armband to lead
The midfielder’s omission should therefore not be interpreted as a lack of influence.
For what it is worth, Rodri has naturally assumed leadership responsibilities throughout his career, and his authority is unlikely to disappear simply because his name is absent from the official captaincy group.
Indeed, Barcelona signed him partly for the qualities he brings beyond his playing ability.
His experience at the highest level and his standing within the Spain setup give him considerable weight inside the squad.
Hence, Rodri does not yet have Barcelona history, but he does have the profile to become one of their most important voices.
