The two met up in Luanda, Angola, as James was there in support of his electric powerboat racing franchise, Team AlUla, at the UIM E1 World Championship Grand Prix. Smith was there for the same occasion as the actor’s Westbrook Racing team was a part of the competition.
According to Hoops Hype, the two actually had a chance to speak with President João Lourenço about them using their platforms to promote tourism, film, and basketball as attractions in Angola.
Journalist Omar Prata, who is covering the UIM E1 World Championship Grand Prix, shared that Angolans look up to the 76ers star, so it makes sense that the government would want to get involved with the NBA superstar.
“I see the potential it could bring to project the city at a time when the government is trying to work on tourism,” Prata said per BBC. “And of course it means a lot to have LeBron James here. Angolans have seen him on television, they try to emulate him on the street courts, they have his posters.”
Angola’s minister for tourism Marcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel spoke on that their desire is to make the country “more desirable to visit, invest in and do business in.”
Why LeBron James chose the 76ers
Soon enough LeBron will be hitting the court with a new team’s name for the first time in eight seasons. He shared the reason why he decided to go to Philly over other NBA teams who wanted him on their roster.
“This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family. What am I really playing for at this point? I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind. I still want to compete, to win and to have a chance at the feeling of winning another championship,” LeBron said on X back in July after formerly committing to the 76ers. “I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
LeBron will be hitting the court in his 76ers uniform on Oct. 20 against the New York Knicks.
