Nikola Jokic has spent years avoiding the spotlight that followed his rise to NBA stardom. Now the Denver Nuggets center says that attention is wearing him down, especially when it follows him into the parts of life he wants to keep private.

Jokic made the admission during an appearance on the Jao Mile Podcast. Asked whether he misses the anonymity he had before becoming famous, the three-time MVP did not hesitate with his answer.

Nikola Jokic Says Fame Is Becoming Exhausting

Jokic said the attention has become harder to handle after more than a decade in the public eye. He also acknowledged that his reaction to people approaching him has changed as that pressure has grown.

“A lot. I have to, I have to admit, a lot,” Jokic said. “And it bothers me more and more, and this is going to sound bad. I’m becoming ruder to people who approach me, because it’s, honestly, it’s exhausting.”

The comment was not about a single bad interaction. Jokic explained that he has started protecting the time he spends away from basketball, including time with people close to him. He said even those around him know that photographs are usually off-limits when he is enjoying his private time.

“Some people in my circle, I spent the whole summer with I really don’t take photos, because that is my time,” Jokic said. “Now I’m going to sound rude again, but it is what it is now, so what if it I really don’t take photos, really, neither with kids.”

That boundary is unusual for a player with Jokic’s profile. He has won three MVP awards, made eight straight All-NBA teams and averaged a triple-double for the second consecutive season in 2025-26, finishing with 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists.

Yet his latest comments show that the attention surrounding those achievements has become a separate burden. Jokic said he understands why fans want pictures, but he has reached a point where he wants some moments to remain untouched by his status as an NBA star.

Jokic said he would rather have fans approach him and say something than immediately pull out a phone. His frustration is not that people recognize him. It is that every interaction can quickly become a request for proof that they met him.

“It’s better for someone to come up to me to tell me something, rather than now to, ‘Hey, take a photo,’” Jokic said.

He then offered the comparison that best captured how he feels about the experience.

“Well, that’s like you go to the zoo and take a photo with someone, or like, you take a picture of some miracle,” Jokic said.

Jokic has rarely tried to build his public image around celebrity. His comments suggest that he has not changed even as his profile has grown. What has changed is how much effort he now feels he needs to spend protecting the life that exists away from basketball.

For most NBA stars, fame is part of the job. For Jokic, it appears to be the part he is still trying to leave at the door when the work is over.
