The contest between the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night was as tight as it can get. But in the bottom of the 11th inning, after the Phillies had taken the lead in the top half of the frame, 5-4, the Braves bounced back, scoring two runs in quick succession — with Drake Baldwin dealing the decisive blow with a run-scoring double to give Atlanta a 6-5 win in walk-off fashion.

With one out in the inning and Ha-Seong Kim at first after he had driven in the lead runner with a single in the previous at-bat, Baldwin came to the plate and worked a count up to 2-2 against Brooks Raley. And on the fifth pitch of the at-bat, the Braves catcher drove a sweper from the Phillies reliever all the way to right-center field, giving Kim enough time to round the bases for the winning run.

This got the man on deck, Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr., all hyped up. With the ball in the gap in the outfield, Acuna was passionate in waving Kim all the way home. In the end, the Phillies didn’t even have a play at the plate. But the Braves know how important grabbing this win is, and in walk-off fashion, no less, which explains why Acuna was so animated at home plate.

This was a comeback and a half for the Braves, a team that was trailing heading into their half of the ninth, 10th, and 11th innings. And yet there they were, able to find a way to seal the victory in the end.

In the ninth, it was Sean Murphy, another catcher for the Braves, who tied the game with an RBI single. The following inning, Mauricio Dubon hit a sacrifice fly to even up the proceedings once more. And then in the 11th, Atlanta, after trailing yet again, finally scored enough runs to take the win.

This win extended the Braves’ lead atop the division to five games with 14 games to go, giving them a more comfortable cushion over the Phillies in the battle for the NL East title.
