The winger was again absent for Sunderland’s Carabao Cup win over Hull City, with Le Bris revealing afterwards that he has required an operation on the meniscus injury.
“Romaine has had meniscus surgery so he’s going to be sidelined for a few months,” Le Bris said.
“It’s really tough because he worked so well during the pre-season, the summer. We are really disappointed for him.
“He is disappointed for sure but we’ll support him until he gets back. He knows he has the club’s backing and that helps. He’s still a good player.”
The setback is particularly frustrating for Mundle after working hard over the summer to put his previous injury problems behind him.
“Sometimes you go through difficult periods, that’s the case,” Le Bris added. “With his hamstrings last season and now this meniscus, he’s really unlucky.”
The Black Cats progressed in the Carabao Cup with a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light thanks to a Chemsdine Talbi goal.
