MLB insider Jeff Passan shared a concerning injury update on Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani. With just a few weeks remaining until the postseason, Ohtani’s injury remains a topic of concern. In his last game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Ohtani looked uncomfortable and suffered four strikeouts.

During his appearance on SportsCenter, Passan said he believes Ohtani won’t pitch again in the regular season or even postseason, for that matter.

“At this point, what’s becoming clearer and far likelier is that we’re not going to see Shohei Ohtani pitch again,” Passan said. “And while the Dodgers have plenty of starting pitching depth, they were hoping that one of their best starters, a guy who was in the Cy Young mix when he was pitching, would be around come October.”

Passan also raised the question of an injury stint after the Dodgers held Ohtani out of the lineup for three consecutive games. Because if the Dodgers decide to do that, Ohtani will have to be on the injured list for 15 days rather than 10 days.

“Shohei Ohtani is all kinds of banged up right now, and the Dodgers need to figure out whether they’re going to put him on the injured list, because if they do, because he is a two-way player, that means he would have to go on for 15 days rather than the 10 for a position player,” Passan added. “And at that point, you’re starting to push up against the edge of the end of the regular season to get those at-bats and get him back in rhythm once he comes off the injured list.”

The Dodgers don’t have a lot of time to make a decision on Ohtani. After seeing him struggle physically, putting him on the injured list would mean Ohtani getting fewer regular-season games to prepare for the postseason.

What’s Going On With Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani

Shohei Ohtani is dealing with several physical issues, including left knee soreness, right biceps discomfort and neck discomfort. He shook his right arm and winced following a four-strikeout game against the Cardinals on Wednesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also acknowledged the problems Ohtani is facing physically and hasn’t looked like himself in weeks. Ohtani went 7-for-51 with one home run over his previous 13 games entering Saturday. Moreover, he hasn’t pitched since July.

“I think that tonight was kind of the tip of the iceberg,” Roberts said after the 8-6 loss to the Cardinals. “But I’ve seen it over the last couple weeks, where he hasn’t been who he is.”

Ohtani has now missed three straight games, and it is the first time that has happened since he joined the Dodgers in 2024. Depending on how Ohtani does in indoor cage hitting, the Dodgers will decide whether an injured list stint is necessary for the Japanese star.

Meanwhile, in Ohtani’s absence, Tommy Edman has taken up lead-off duties and the Dodgers defeated Washington 6-5 on Saturday.

With the Dodgers trying to run it back and complete a three-peat this fall, Ohtani’s availability is crucial to the team’s run in the upcoming postseason.
