Conor Benn reflects on Eubank Jr rivalry: ‘It was spiteful, it was personal’

Conor Benn prepares to challenge Ryan Garcia in Las Vegas

Despite never winning a world title, Benn (25-1, 14 KOs) is one of the biggest stars in the sport. Since returning to professional boxing after his much-publicised battles with PEDs, he has battled Eubank Jr twice, losing the first one, which was ultimately crowned the fight of the year. He has since left Matchroom, moving to Zuffa Boxing, where he has beaten Regis Prograis, before the fight with Garcia was announced.

Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) comes into the fight as the reigning WBC champ, a title he won against Mario Barrios. The American has often flattered to deceive during his career, but his talent is not in dispute. Garcia was electrifying against Devin Haney, but ultimately tested positive for the banned substance ostarine on both the day before and the day of the fight.

Conor Benn reflects on personal rivalry with Chris Eubank Jr

Speaking to Dan Rafael, Benn discussed his feelings around losing the first fight and winning the second, and why beating Eubank Jr was so personal:

“Because then if I had lost the second time around, it would have meant that he was really is better than me. I would have had to accept the fact that he is actually better than me. And because it was so personal…it was just personal. It was spiteful.

“It was real mixed feelings, even getting fight of the year. I lost, and I genuinely thought I’d knock him out. I lost to this guy, but I beat myself in there. I shouldn’t have fought that fight in there, but the emotions were overwhelming.”
