The Cincinnati Reds have been mired in mediocrity for a while now, and while they made the postseason and even got off to a good start this season, they really need some more help to get back into the playoffs and make a serious run.

While Sal Stewart turning into a superstar helps, the Reds do still need to invest more in this team. More specifically, they need greater financial commitments from the Reds ownership group.
Fortunately, that might be coming soon. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, rival MLB owners are predicting the Reds will be the next franchise to sell.

"Rival owners predict that the Cincinnati Reds could be the next MLB team sold," Nightengale writes. "Certainly, Bob Castellini will make a cool profit if he does put them on the block, purchasing the franchise for $270 million in 2006. It's now worth about $1.6 billion."
Seeing Bob Castellini sell the Reds' franchise would be some massive news for the Cincinnati fanbase. Having a new owner, one likely willing to spend more money, could turn the Reds into a true contender once again.
For years now, the Reds have been unwilling to splurge in free agency, and they missed out on signing hometown slugger Kyle Schwarber this past offseason, instead seeing him return to the Philadelphia Phillies.
While five years and $150 million for a designated hitter would've been a lot, considering that Schwarber leads the National League in home runs, he would've been a great signing.

But it's more than just Schwarber. So many other players would benefit the Reds greatly, but they've been refraining from spending big on the open market, or even with their own players at times.
While the 2026 Reds might be a disappointment, if Cincinnati does wind up selling and a new owner comes in and is willing to spend more, there might be a lot more optimism about the future of the Reds being World Series competitors than things appear now.
Seeing that rival MLB owners are predicting the Reds will be the next franchise sold, Reds fans might finally have some long-term optimism to look forward to.
