It’s not the first time the veteran receiver has seen his name floated in trade rumors, and he knows that it probably will not be the last.
Slayton was said to have been on the bubble ahead of last weekend’s roster cutdown, but instead he finds himself back in the Big Apple for another season.
While he did enough to stick around for now, the longest tenured Giant knows he still has plenty left to show playing under his fourth different regime in seven years.
“Anytime there’s new people there’s going to be that,” he said. “I understand you have to show and prove yourself whenever there’s new, so that’s what I plan on doing this year.”
Slayton is coming off his fifth 30+ reception, 500+ yard campaign.
He’s dealt with some bumps and still isn’t back to 100 percent following offseason surgery, but feels things are finally trending back in the right direction.
The 29-year-old showed that during the Giants’ second preseason game, leading the team with four receptions for 58 yards in a commanding victory over the Dolphins.
“Honestly, I needed to see that,” Harbaugh said postgame. “Everybody probably did.”
With his roster spot officially secured, the attention now turns towards exactly what type of role Slayton will play in Big Blue’s new-look receiver room.
He’d been serving as one of their top-two playmakers on the outside, but could find himself replaced with plenty of other newcomers in the mix.
No matter who he ends up being used, Slayton is confident that he belongs.
“We have a bunch of playmakers in that room,” he said. “There are a lot of talented guys we added to the roster, I see myself as one of those guys in whatever capacity that can be.”
