Federal League boys soccer coaches rank teams, offer players to watch

The high school boys soccer season and is underway and the action in the Federal League is going to heat up soon.

The highly competitive conference recently released a preseason poll conducted by the league coaches and a list of players to watch for the upcoming season.

Team previews

GlenOak Golden Eagles

  • Players to watch: Enzo Gliatta, F, jr.; Ethan Gupta, D, jr.; Ian Meyer, M, jr.; Karson Frame, M, sr.; Bryce Burton, D, sr.; Eli Smith, F, jr.
  • Coach Damien Marchione says: "GlenOak graduated 18 seniors and returns only eight letterwinners from the team that won its first outright league title in 30 years, including our All-Ohio goalkeeper and leading scorer. While less experienced overall on the roster, the team returns a strong nucleus and if we get solid contributions in new roles we hope to for the Federal League and a district championship."

Green Bulldogs

  • Players to watch: Owen Smythe, M-F, sr.; Kellen Snee, M-D, sr.; Giuseppe Spano, D, sr.; Mason Daly, M, sr.
  • Coach Brandon Good says: "We have experience and talent at all levels of the field and are looking to compete for the Federal League title and a deep playoff run."

Hoover Vikings

  • Players to watch: Austin Ash, F-M, sr.; Jake Scott, GK, sr.; Maddox Adams, M, jr.; Rocco Nunziato, D, sr.; Matthew Wesley, jr., D; Joey Riedinger, D, jr.
  • Coach Jonanthan Zahn says: "The Hoover boys look to continue the success of the past few seasons. We have 14 returning lettermen and five returning starters. It's a good mix of youth and experience that should give us the opportunity to do so. A tough schedule will help us grow and develop with the goal of returning to the district championship game."

Jackson Polar Bears

  • Players to watch: Noah Thomas, M, sr.; Dawson Wanzer, M, sr.; Nick McCue, D, jr.; Toby Yanchunas, D, so.
  • Coach Brian Zilla says: We have a great blend of experienced senior returners and a talented young core. Our seniors bring leadership and experience, while our younger players give us depth, energy and plenty of potential. We're looking forward to seeing how this group develops and competes together this season.

Lake Blue Streaks

  • Players to watch: Sean Sprang, M, jr.; Aldo Ortiz-Jimenez, M, jr.; Hunter Neiss, M, jr.; Luke Moorhead, GK, jr.; Logan Hawk, D, sr.; Andrew Vensel, M-D, sr.
  • Coach Brad Dobney says: "It's the second year of trying to teach a team to play a different way. Things are starting to come together, but without the resources of a lot of the rest of the Federal League, we have to really have to be on top of it to have a chance in most games. We have the talent to compete in a lot of our non-conference schedule. The team is beginning to buy in to the idea of keeping the ball on the deck and playing a style more suited to staying in possession. If we do that well and our defensive line remains as solid as they have been, we can make noise in Division III come October. Our success will come down to effort and execution of the plan."

McKinley Bulldogs

  • Players to watch: Ali Abusniena, M, sr.; Sebastian Daza, F, sr.; Marin Hernandez, GK, sr.; Jorge Lanza, D, sr.
  • Coach Amado Sandoval says: We have 11 returning players and a little more experience than last year."

Perry Panthers

  • Player to watch: Pryce Destefano, F, sr.
  • Coach John Burnworth says: "We are a young team with tons of potential."
