Alysa Liu has become arguably the most prominent figure skater in the world. She won two gold medals at the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February, further cementing her status on the global stage.
She has seen her popularity rise in recent years, including getting endorsement deals from big-name brands and hanging out with Taylor Swift and Laufey. Her followers on Instagram have grown to 8.2 million.
Liu, however, will be out of the spotlight for a while after announcing that she will sit out this season. In a post on Instagram, she cited the need for “personal growth” and to allow her “artistry and skating” to “evolve.”

“I’m gonna take the time to recalibrate, fine-tune things, and whatnot. So fear not, I’ll be back, and in the meantime, I’ll be rooting for my teammates near and far,” wrote Liu.

In a report from NBC Sports’ Nick Zaccardi, the 21-year-old star said she will continue training despite not competing. She is eyeing a return next year.
“I really want to improve my skating, and I wanted to take the time to do that for myself and just to evolve, and then I’ll be back after that is done,” explained Liu.
“Logically, emotionally, and physically, this just makes the most sense. I will miss seeing the international competitors at all the international (competitions), but there will be more, so it’s fine.”
Aside from her pair of gold medals at the Winter Olympics, she has also won two gold medals at the US Figure Skating Championships, a gold medal and a bronze medal at the World Figure Skating Championships, and a gold medal at the Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final.
