Bronny James did not offer a sentimental answer when a fan asked about his father leaving the Los Angeles Lakers.

He did not offer much of an answer at all.

While walking through what appeared to be an arena parking area, the Lakers guard was asked how he felt about LeBron James leaving Los Angeles for the Philadelphia 76ers.

“It’s whatever,” Bronny replied in a video that is circulating on social media. “It’s my dad.”

The brief response quickly spread across social media, with some fans interpreting Bronny’s delivery as indifference toward his father’s departure.

That may be reading too much into an informal interaction. Bronny was responding to a stranger while continuing to walk, not sitting for an interview about the end of their historic Lakers partnership.

His answer, however, was consistent with what has been reported since LeBron chose Philadelphia: Father and son are comfortable following separate paths.

LeBron, Bronny James Were ‘Not a Package Deal’

LeBron signed a two-year, $8 million contract with Philadelphia in July, ending his eight-season run with the Lakers.

His departure immediately raised questions about whether Bronny might request a trade to Philadelphia. Rich Paul, who represents both players, quickly dismissed that possibility.

“They are not a package deal,” Paul told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

Shelburne reported that there was no plan or request for Bronny to follow his father. She added that the Lakers had guaranteed Bronny’s contract and that members of the coaching staff had developed a fondness for him.

Dan Woike of The Athletic reported July 14 that assumptions about LeBron and Bronny remaining linked after becoming teammates were incorrect, according to league sources granted anonymity to discuss front-office strategy.

Woike added that LeBron’s departure was not viewed as being connected to Bronny’s standing with the Lakers.

Although Woike cautioned that circumstances can change, he reported that the 21-year-old guard is well-liked inside the locker room, respected for his work ethic and viewed as having improved significantly during his first two seasons.

Bronny James Moves Forward With Lakers

Bronny’s offseason activity further indicates that his focus remains with Los Angeles.

He attended the Lakers’ Las Vegas Summer League victory before joining their veteran minicamp. Bronny is now in Slovenia with the rest of the Lakers roster as the team builds chemistry around Luka Doncic.

Rookie Cameron Carr is the lone player absent from the gathering because he was required to attend the NBA’s rookie orientation.

The Lakers guaranteed Bronny’s $2.3 million salary for the 2026-27 season, signaling that their investment in his development extends beyond his father’s presence.

Bronny averaged 2.9 points and 1.2 assists across 42 appearances last season, shooting 40.9% from the field and 38.6% from three-point range. Those remain modest numbers, but both his efficiency and comfort improved from his rookie year.

His challenge now is finding a place in a crowded backcourt featuring Doncic, Austin Reaves, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton.

The Lakers selected Bronny with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 draft. Months later, he and LeBron became the first father and son to appear together in an NBA game.

They made history together. Bronny’s understated answer — and his continued work with the Lakers — suggests he is ready to build what comes next on his own.
