The trilogy then concludes on 29 August, when the two sides return to action for the second leg of the MTN8 semifinal.

That means three matches, two competitions and only seven days between Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United. The fixture calendar has essentially decided that these two teams are not allowed to escape each other.

For the players and coaches, there will be little time to recover. For supporters, however, it promises to be a fascinating week of football.

  • 22 August: MTN8 semifinal first leg – Peter Mokaba Stadium
  • 25 August: Betway Premiership – Orlando Stadium
  • 29 August: MTN8 semifinal second leg.

Both teams must manage fatigue, injuries, squad rotation and tactical adjustments while competing for an advantage in two different competitions. Every match could also provide the opponent with valuable information for the next encounter.

NEW SEASON START

For Orlando Pirates, the week comes at a time when the defending MTN8 champions have made an impressive start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The Buccaneers currently sit at the top of the Betway Premiership with seven points from three matches. They opened their league campaign with a 2-0 victory over Milford FC, before drawing 1-1 with AmaZulu FC and then defeating Chippa United FC 3-0.

Their cup defence also started positively. Orlando Pirates needed extra time to overcome Durban City FC 2-1 in the quarter-finals and book their place in the last four.

Sekhukhune United, meanwhile, have collected six points from their opening three league matches under coach Cedric Kaze.

Babina Noko started with a narrow 1-0 victory over Durban City FC, before suffering a 2-0 defeat to Kaizer Chiefs FC. They responded strongly by beating Polokwane City FC 2-0.

Their MTN8 campaign has arguably been even more dramatic. Sekhukhune United produced a thrilling 4-3 extra-time victory over AmaZulu FC in the quarter-finals to secure their semifinal place.
