The Toronto Blue Jays seemed to accept that their postseason hopes in 2026 were looking dim, hence their decision to become a selling ballclub at the trade deadline. But since the deadline, the Blue Jays have played good baseball, winning 10 of their past 15 games heading into a Wednesday night clash against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Max Scherzertook the mound for Toronto on Wednesday, and he’s coming off a solid outing in which he allowed just one run in five innings against the Boston Red Sox. But disaster ensued for Scherzer against the Rays. One play, in particular, caused some damage that the veteran starter could not recover from.

With the bases loaded and just one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Scherzer induced a weak fly ball to shallow left field that the man on third, Yandy Diaz, would have had a difficult time scoring a sacrifice fly on. Instead, Blue Jays left fielder Jesus Sanchez missed the ball completely, gifting the Rays two runs while leaving two runners on base with still just one out in the inning.

Scherzer was justifiably mad, as that is a routine fly ball for 99% of outfielders in the big leagues. The Blue Jays veteran was charged with two earned runs on that blunder by Sanchez, and he proceeded to lose all composure on the mound.

The Rays scored their next two runs on bunt singles, pushing their lead to 6-1. Junior Caminero then hit an RBI groundout, which extended the Blue Jays’ deficit to six runs.

Toronto did try their best to make amends on offense, scoring five combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to pull to within one, 7-6. Alas, this wasn’t enough, as the Rays held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final third innings to hand Toronto their 66th loss of the season.
