A South Carolina mother has been arrested after cops say her six-year-old child was found with a loaded gun on a school bus.
According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department , the school resource officer for JP Thomas Elementary School responded at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after a student was found to have a loaded firearm on a bus.
What was found?
Cops said the firearm they found was an AR pistol with .556 rounds. The gun was safely taken away from the child and there were no reported injuries, the sheriff’s department said in a media release.
The child’s mother, 35-year-old Destar Hall, was called to the school. Authorities discovered that the gun was not properly secured by Hall at their home, which led to her child obtaining it.
What happened to the mother?
Hall was arrested and taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, where she was held pending a bond hearing, per The State .
She was charged with unlawful conduct towards a child.
It’s not known what happened to the child after Hall’s arrest, or whether they will face discipline from the school or district.
Richland School District One released a statement, noting it is moving forward with internal processes and is working alongside the sheriff’s department, WLTX reported.
“On the morning of Tuesday, August 18, 2026, a student at J.P. Thomas Elementary School was in possession of a firearm,” the statement read. “Due to the quick response of Richland County School District One (Richland One) administrators, school resource officers, and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, the firearm was quickly and safely retrieved, and parents were notified of the situation.
