Taiwo Awoniyi joins Coventry ahead of Premier League return

Coventry City have completed the signing of Nigeria international striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for a reported £9 million.

The 29-year-old becomes Frank Lampard's latest addition as the Sky Blues prepare for their first Premier League campaign in 25 years following last season’s Championship title success.

Awoniyi spent four years at Forest after arriving from Union Berlin in 2022, scoring 23 goals in 103 appearances for the club. His most memorable spell came towards the end of the 2022/23 season, when he scored six times in Forest’s final four league games to help secure their top-flight survival.

However, opportunities were more limited last season, with Awoniyi starting just three of his 17 Premier League appearances and scoring four goals.

The powerful centre-forward will now provide Lampard with another option in attack and is expected to lead the line for Coventry this season.

Awoniyi is the club's sixth signing of the summer and joins Gus Hamer, Carl Rushworth, Loum Tchaouna, Aurèle Amenda and Caleb Yirenkyi as part of Coventry's preparations for their return to the top flight.
