Bihar: Seven killed, 12 injured after stampede at Lakhisarai temple

Seven persons were killed and 12 others were injured in a stampede at Ashok Dham temple in Bihar’s Lakhisarai district on Monday, reported Hindustan Times.

Most of those killed were women, according to the newspaper.

The incident took place at around 6.40 am when a large crowd attempted to enter the temple, one of the oldest shrines of the Hindu deity Shiva in Bihar.

“The barricade broke down, which triggered a sudden stampede,” Lakhisarai District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar was quoted as saying by The Hindu.

An electric pole also fell at the site, Sub-Divisional Police Officer Shivam Kumar told ANI.

Quoting unidentified witnesses, Hindustan Times reported that an estimated 50,000 persons had gathered at the temple on the third Monday of the Hindu month of Sawan, which is said to be auspicious.

Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary described the incident as extremely tragic and heart-wrenching.

Expressing condolences to the families of those killed, he announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh for them.
