It’s safe to say that Russell Westbrook’s career went through a lot of stages. His early contender years next to Kevin Durant with the Oklahoma City Thunder made him a fan favourite.
After KD’s departure, Russ carried the Thunder for years and became NBA MVP. His latter years after leaving were filled with many team switches and a fair amount of ridicule from fans.
As he announces his retirement, though, it’s important to remember that Westbrook has been one of the greatest point guards to ever play in the league. And one stat in particular makes that obvious.

Westbrook played alongside LeBron James in Los Angeles, although it wasn’t a successful experiment and ended on a sour note for all involved parties.
But the two share an NBA record, and this one highlights just how incredible a career Westbrook has had. As a scorer and playmaker, there’s one statistic in which Russ is only surpassed by the King.
Westbrook and James are the only two players in the league’s history to have recorded more than 25,000 points along with getting more than 10,000 assists, which is no mean feat.
Westbrook in his prime was the triple-double king, so this stat shouldn’t really be a surprise. But as one of the NBA’s greats leaves the game, it is important to contextualise just how great he has been.
He will retire as the all-time NBA leader in triple-doubles with 209. Westbrook amassed 27,176 points, 8,916 rebounds, and 10,351 assists during his legendary run. A true legend of the game.
