Raiders' Fernando Mendoza and Kirk Cousins QB competition could bring a plot twist
· Yahoo Sports
When the Las Vegas Raiders selected former Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, fans were understandably optimistic that they'd found a new franchise quarterback. That feeling still stands true and remained that way after the Raiders signed veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins. However, the Cousins signing did signal a real possibility (and expectation for many) that Mendoza's time as the clear-cut starter may be delayed just a bit.

Cousins knows why he's in Vegas, and Mendoza knows he's expected to become the team's future and long-term answer at quarterback. The two have seemingly gotten along great, and it's led to no issues. But in an interesting turn of events, it appears there could be a real chance that Mendoza's need for a "bridge" quarterback in Cousins may not prove to be the case.
Fernando Mendoza's 'real chance' to win Raiders' starting QB job
On Tuesday, longtime NFL reporter Vincent Bonsignore of the California Post dropped a nugget that stood out quite a bit. Along with stating that there's a "real QB battle" at the Raiders' training camp, he added that he believes there's a "real chance" Mendoza wins the job.
There's actually a real QB battle in @Raiders camp.

I still believe Kirk gets the opener, but it's not etched in stone. Fernando has a real chance to win the job. https://t.co/yiwr3JgaDa
Even beyond the possibility of Mendoza starting in Week 1, it doesn't sound as though the view around Vegas is that Mendoza will need to sit and learn for a very long time. That's a great sign for the rookie quarterback, and potentially an even better one for the Raiders, who haven't been able to catch a break at the position in recent years.
Now, whether Mendoza actually does get the Week 1 starting nod remains up in the air, but at the very least, his play in the preseason will be one of the biggest storylines to monitor.
