CBS’ Tony Romo update is bad news for former NFL star

Tony Romo’s future in the NFL broadcast booth remains uncertain, and the latest update from CBS Sports doesn’t provide much clarity for the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback.
CBS Sports president David Berson addressed Romo’s status Tuesday during the network’s “NFL on CBS” Media Day ahead of the 2026 NFL season. His comments made it clear that the network has not yet decided what comes next for its longtime lead analyst.

No decision on Romo’s future

The network announced on July 31 that he would remain away from his broadcasting duties “until further notice.”
When asked about the situation, Berson said it remains an ongoing process.
“It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing,” Berson said. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.”
Berson also emphasized that the situation involves both personal and legal matters involving Romo.
In the meantime, CBS has already made a significant adjustment to its broadcast team. J.J. Watt has been selected to replace Romo as the network’s top booth analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz.
That move could potentially become more than a temporary solution depending on how the situation develops.

CBS reportedly still owes him $72 million over the next four years as part of the 10-year, $180 million contract he signed in 2020.
At the time, Romo was widely regarded as the best analyst in football. His ability to anticipate plays before they happened became his trademark and helped revolutionize the expectations for former players entering broadcasting.
However, his reputation has taken some hits in recent years. Questions emerged about his preparation, while some viewers also became increasingly critical of his broadcasting style.
Now, with his future at CBS uncertain and Watt already stepping into his role, Romo’s once-secure position at the top of NFL broadcasting suddenly looks much less certain.
