Starting cornerback D.J. Reed has missed time recently throughout Detroit training camp, but Campbell said on Sunday that it's not a major concern.
"Yeah, Reed, that’s not a major thing. His is really more kind of groin and so that’s not a major issue. We feel good about that. When he’s ready, he’ll be ready to go," Campbell said.
That's encouraging to hear about Reed. The 5-foot-9, 190-pound corner is expected to be a key playmaker on the back end of a Detroit defense that is still nursing star safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch back to health.
After a terrific start to the 2025 season, a hamstring injury sidelined Reed for six games and his production dropped off when he returned. But, if Reed can remain healthy this season, the Lions hope to see the player that limited opposing passers to just a 61.3 rating and zero touchdowns when they targeted him over the first month of last season.
Other Sunday Lions injury notes
Campbell said that free agent signing Payton Turner is still dealing with a back injury that's sidelined him throughout Lions training camp.
"Yeah, nothing new really. He’s got a back that we’re just trying to get to calm down and that’s a day-to-day type thing," Campbell said of Turner.
Turner, 27, has totaled 50 tackles, 11 quarterback hits, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, four passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in his NFL career.
Offensive lineman Ben Bartch—another 2026 free agency signing—was expected to see about 10 reps on Sunday.
"Yeah, look, I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t hopeful he would have been out there more than now, but I also know there’s no setbacks, anything like that. He’s a veteran guy. From what we know about him in the short time we’ve been around him, he’s a guy that, you know, it means something to him. He’s smart, he’s conscientious, all those things.
"And we’re going to get him out there a little bit today. We’re hoping we get him about 10 reps maybe. Somewhere in there. So, that’s the plan is to begin to work him into some more stuff. Look, there’s a reason he’s here. We think he brings outstanding competition. He’s got a shot, but certainly he’s behind the mark, right? He’s missed some days and that’s just part of coming off an injury. That’s the hand you’re dealt," Campbell said.
