Vikings’ Jordan Mason Turning Heads Over Aaron Jones Ahead of 2026 NFL Season

Jordan Mason and Aaron Jones have been duking it out in training camp over the starting running back position ahead of the Minnesota Vikings’ 2026 campaign. However, it appears that one of them has the significant edge this time around.

Mason is gearing up for the fifth season of his NFL career, his second with the Vikings. He has been primarily a backup rusher so far, recently playing behind Jones throughout the 2025 campaign.
With Jones boasting more experience and trust in the offense, it made sense for Mason to step in whenever the team needed him for certain situations. However, it appears that both running backs’ places in the depth chart might change significantly going into 2026.
Reporters of the Purple Daily Podcast has been present at the Vikings’ training camp sessions. They focused on the running back room, noting how much better Mason has gotten while thinking he is on pace for a breakout season.
“Minnesota Vikings running back Jordan Mason has been a standout at training camp and looks poised for a big 2026 season. According to the Purple Daily Podcast, Mason looks better than Jones, and “the way [Mason] is moving around, the way that he runs. I really like Jordan Mason as a fit in the new run scheme that the Vikings have with their new wide zone concepts,”” reporter Nathan Harvey wrote on Rotoballer.
“Last season, Mason totaled 758 rushing yards and six touchdowns in 16 games, averaging 4.8 yards per carry, while Jones averaged 4.2 yards per carry. While Mason doesn’t offer much in the passing game, any improvement there could boost his stock, especially if the team improves on their abysmal showing in 2025. Ranked RB37 in RotoBaller’s positional rankings, Mason is a great value that could easily top his current price this season.”

Not only that, but they might also unlock another dimension of their offense if Jordan Mason does emerge as the leading rusher for the 2026 campaign.
Mason played in 16 games that included five starts for the backup running back. In those games, he racked up 159 carries for 758 yards and six touchdowns. In comparison, Aaron Jones started in 12 games as he recorded 132 rushes for 548 yards and two touchdowns.
The Vikings will hope to improve upon their 9-8 record from the previous season. They also intend to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence and end their three-year NFC North title drought.
Minnesota sees its campaign get underway at home, hosting the Chicago Bears. That matchup will commence on Sept. 13 at 4:25 p.m. ET.
