Porter flight from Victoria to Toronto cancelled after child refuses to be buckled in

A Porter Airlines flight from Victoria, B.C. to Toronto was cancelled on Thursday after a parent and flight crew were unable to buckle a child’s seatbelt, leaving passengers stranded until the next day.
Flight PD444 was scheduled to take off from Victoria International Airport on Thursday and was destined for Toronto’s Pearson Airport, but it didn’t leave the runway due to what Porter called a safety precaution.
The plane had left the terminal and was on its way to the runway for departure when a young child standing in their seat refused to be buckled in, despite attempts by their parent and cabin crew, said a statement from the airline.
The crew realized that “a young child was standing in their seat and (refused to be) secured by their seatbelt,” Porter Airlines spokesperson Brad Cicero told the National Post in an email Saturday.
“Attempts by the accompanying parent and crew to address this were unsuccessful.”
Plane returned to terminal, passengers disembarked
Because of this, the aircraft “could not takeoff in this unsafe condition, so the crew elected to return to the terminal and have the passengers disembark,” Cicero added.
In the time required for the plane to bridge, deplane the unruly child and parent, retrieve their luggage and refile paperwork, the aircraft would’ve been delayed significantly for another departure the same day. The airport’s runway closed at 12:30 a.m.
The runway closure meant PD444’s passengers were forced to spend the night in Victoria.
Porter apologized for the delayed flight and its impact on passengers.
Cicero noted the flight departed on Friday afternoon.
