Marcus Rashford will be playing for Manchester United again next season ‘unless something crazy happens’.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who adds that there are currently no active negotiations for the forward to leave before next month’s deadline.
Why United have had no choice but to keep Rashford
Yet, it’s safe to say it wasn’t any party’s first intention heading into the transfer window.
Rashford had his heart set on returning to Barcelona permanently, while United were awaiting their lump sum that could then be reinvested on a new left winger.

A major spanner was thrown in the works when Barcelona opted against activating his £26 million buy option. Then, over a month later, the 28-year-old’s £40m release clause – valid for any club except Liverpool and Manchester City – expired.
It means that in order for Rashford to depart, a new fee would need to be negotiated with United, who would then also need to sanction the arrival of a replacement.
Rashford ready to revive United career
As a result, the Red Devils graduate is preparing to be reintegrated into the first-team squad for the first time since the start of 2025, when he joined Aston Villa on loan.
Michael Carrick will be crossing his fingers in hope Rashford can replicate the prolific attacking form he showed last season, having returned 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances for the Catalan giants.
He isn’t a shoo-in for a starting spot, though, as Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha all impressed throughout their maiden campaigns – the latter of which claimed Rashford’s iconic No.10 digits upon his arrival at Old Trafford.
United kick off 2026/2027 away to newly promoted Hull City on Saturday, August 22. Their first home outing comes against Ipswich Town eight days later.
